When in Colchester
When we visited the oldest town in England, we were
treated to some typical english weather. It was cold,
windy, overcast and more than once it started to rain.
Colchester itself was a really nice town though and full
of history. Unlike many ancient towns it is not all locked
away. During a walk around the town you can see buildings
and structures from Roman times to the present day. It is
easy to walk to most of the sights within the town centre.
The Dutch Quarter is a collection of historic houses that
make up the integral part of Colchester. There have been some
modern developments, but the majority of it is in keeping
with the general architectural style that was brought
over by Dutch immigrants in the 15th and 16th century.
Houses are set in long terraces, climbing up the hill, with
narrow streets between them, making it easier to walk
through the area than drive through it.
