Nijmegen Four Days Marches : Day One

The start of the 93rd Four Days Marches (Vierdaagse)
went well. Early in the morning, at four o'clock, Marchleader
Johan Willemstein opened the marches for the participants
that have to walk 50 kms. The present spectators cheered
and applauded when the participants started their walk.
This first day of the marches is known as the Day of Elst.

This is what we saw this morning at a quarter to six
when we started our walk. This bridge is called the
Waalbrug.

Our day went well, it was quite warm, but that is
much better than having to walk in the rain. My dad
was the only one with some muscle trouble, but we
are hoping that he will be feeling better tomorrow.

Some animals are just funnier than others and one
of those funny animals is the Owl ! Well i think so
anyway. So i just had to make one and i think it worked
out so nicely that i shall make more of them in the future.
A flock of owls, looking forward to it :)

Nijmegen here we come, again !

Next tuesday we will be participating in the Nijmegen
Four Days Marches again. This will be the fifth time
and we are really looking forward to it again.
The Four Days Marches are an achievement walk for
four consecutive days, in which annually over 45,000
walkers are participating. From all over the world people
are coming to Nijmegen to walk for four days in and
around the city and its beautiful surroundings. The women
have to walk 40 km (27 miles) for four consecutive days
making it a total of 160 km. The men have to walk 50 km
(34 miles) for four consecutive days making it a total of
200 km. Thousands of spectators are cheering the walkers
along the route every day. After four days of walking a
glorious entry over the Via Gladiola awaits the walker and
afterwards they will receive their well-deserved
Four Days Medal.

The Four Days Medal (Vierdaagsekruis) is for
many a coveted and, once earned, a cherished
possession. It is shown to friends and relations,
often given a place of honour in the home. The
medal is the "cross for proven marching ability",
as formulated in the Order-in-Council of October 1909.
After the event, the Four Days Marches participant
usually accepts his or her medal whithout realising
that their efforts have earned them a royally approved
decoration which Dutch servicemen may wear on their
uniform. The Four Days Medal is one of The Netherlands'
official decorations.

Frugal Santa

For these frugal Santas you need an old book, pictures
from folders you get in the mail, some (printed)
vintage vignettes, glitterglue, some string and glue.

Even more recycle craft

I am very much into crafts that recycle stuff, give
is a second life so to say. BUT i do not want to reuse
stuff that will not give me a hundred percent great
result, i do consider quality a very important aspect.
I am quite content with the result of recycled enevelopes
though. They are recycled pages from magazines and i
think they look cool. If i would get a postcard or letter
in an envelope like this, i would keep them both.

As our world is overflowing with our waste,
it becomes more and more important to recylce
and that is just what i have been doing, making
more envelopes. When i choose pages for these
envelopes, i tend to go for the ones with little or
no lettering on it, but that is very personal of course.

In This House : Market Street 5

There is a store in Market Street that is specialised
in headwear and it is called "The mad Hatter" The owner
of he boutique is Harriet and she makes hats that are both
beautiful, outragous and fun. After attending fashion
school in the big city, she decided to return to the village
where she was born, to build her empire. And she did.
Whenever there is a special occasion, the villagers turn
to her to buy a new hat or bonnet. And the thing is, it
never seems to be the customer that chooses the hat,
but it is the hat that chooses the wearer. When they
put on the hat that is meant for them, something magical
happens. A sudden beam of sun hits the store or a flock
of birds land in front of the store and they start to sing.

Another society in Coneberry Village is "The sky is
not the limit". Gathered there is a group of enthousiasts
who like to do things like building one-man-planes and
rockets, in short : they want a piece of heaven. Their ultimate
goal is to build an unmanned rocket that can travel to the
moon. And they are not just enthousiasts, every single one
has studied something that can be of service to the group.
Robert Janeway for example has studied astronomy and is
usually called "The Rocket Scientist". When studying at
university he was involved in an experiment gone wrong,
and since he is said to have special powers and abilities. When
he is in the room, even though there is no source of light, it
does never go completely dark. And when he is around electrical
equipment, it is said to suddenly come to life, even though
it is not plugged in ...

In This House : Baker Street 9

Coneberry Village has many clubs and societies. The villagers
just love to do things together, enjoy eachother's company and
share interests. One of those clubs is the CBC, the Coneberry
Bingo Club. Its members are as diverse as you can imagine :
young and old, from old Coneberry families and new inhabitants
and most important, they come from all walks of life. They play
on tuesdays. On saturdays they have an open house, everyone
can participate on those days and the proceeds go to a good cause.
The matriarch of the CBC is eighty-five year old Mrs. Brown.
She has been a member of the club for over sixty years. She
does not speak a lot, but she does listen a lot. And if there is
ever a villager that needs council, they go to her.

In This House : Baker Street 10

Coneberry Village has its share of ghosts, as every village
has, but one of them is a bit different from the others. She
is a little girl called Sue and can be seen in the alleyways
behind the houses. And if you listen very carefully, you can
hear her skip and sing. Although she is seen through out the
whole village, she usually plays in the alley behind Baker Street,
as it is quiet there and she likes that because she is as shy as a
ghost, as she was as a girl. She has a lovely white dress and a
big camelia pinned to it as a corsage. She always has her doll with
her and her puppy dog. She has long teaparties with both
of them, sitting on empty crates in the alley. Her doll called
Elsie she carries around in a wicker basket and her puppy
called Mr. Nobble usually just runs around freely, but
sometimes has a pink silk ribbon around his neck as a leash.
Noone in Coneberry Village knows where the little girl came
from, because there has never been a girl of her description
living in the village. The only explanation would be that
someone has brought her here, like a piece of the their past
that will not let go. But who might that be ? Who has such a
sad story in their past ?

In This House : Old Town Square 7

The Belle Family is a musical family, they all love to sing
and play musical instruments. Even the two youngest members
of the family, Beryl and Davin, have already been joining in the
musical fun that is going on in the weekends in number seven
Old Town Square. The whole family gathers in the cosy kitchen
for tea and after that, the family goes into the parlor, where all
the musical instruments they own, are kept. They play and sing
and dance untill they are too tired to stay up any longer. On
saturdays they invite family and friends to join them and
a merry gathering can be seen through the parlor windows.
On sundays the family goes to church, where Father plays the
organ and the eldest Daughter, Amy, plays the violin during
the sermons. Many of the other family members sing in the
choir and they sing like angels.

Recycle Craft : collage

Recycle those folders and magazines and make some
collages. The fun thing with collages is that everything goes.
A collage, from the french "coller" (to glue), is an
assemblage of different items, creating a new whole.
A collage may include pictures from magazines, newspaper
clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers,
portions of other artwork, photographs and other found
objects and anything else you can come up with, glued to
a piece of paper, cardboard or canvas. The origins of collage
can be traced back hundreds of years, but this technique
made a reappearance in the early 20th century as an art form.

In This House : Booklet

I have made quite a few houses now and i want to
keep them together. Here is a batch bound into a
booklet. I made a cover for the booklet using a selection
of hobbystuff : papers, a stamp, a hand-drawn stencil,
a lettering ruler, envelopes and some odds and ends. The
base for the booklet is made from an empty pizzabox.

In This House : Beach Road 2

In Beach Road 2 lies the house of Poppy. Poppy loves
the sea and she loves parties. She works in Coneberry's
cake boutique called "La Tarte". The cakes Poppy makes
are so pretty that they make your mouth water. Every
summer she organises the nicest beach parties you can
imagine. There are fizzy drinks, there are colourful decorations
and the best cakes in the coutry. Everyone in Coneberry Village
is invited to her beach parties and everyone that attends
always has lots of fun. When the autumn comes, Poppy is a
bit sad. But then she thinks of the next summer and she
begins to plan new parties, design new cakes and decorations
and is as happy as she was in the summer again.

In This House : Abbey Garden 20

Every village has at least one Haunted House, and
Coneberry Village is no exception. A good example
of this is the house on Abbey Garden. There have
been accounts of people seeing ghosts in the house
and its garden for as long as everyone can remember.
There is a man in Coneberry Village who has a special
interest when it comes to the house and its inhabitants.
His name is Mister Saint-Martin and he can see and
communicate with ghosts. Whenever there is something
spooky going on in Coneberry Village, Mister Saint-Martin
is there to check it out. He has been known to help out
people that had spirits lingering in their homes by
convincing the ghosts to move on, but he seems to be
unable to get the inhabitants of Abbey Garden 20 to
leave. Or maybe he has not really tried ?
